Note: From Monday 17th November we will have 3 levels at all our venues:  Beginners, improvers and intermediate, in addition to a turns/styling/isolation class.

Latest...

From 16th Nov...
After a successful start for our new teacher, Jason, we will be changing the format of our lessons to ensure everyone is taught at a level suitable for them:

While Steve teaches the beginners class at 7.40, Jason will be teaching turns and styling - this is for ladies AND guys - the men need to know how to lead the ladies correctly in the turns, and Jason will also be teaching the left and right doubles for men.

Jason will now be teaching improvers at 8.30 (8.45 at Gt Doddington) and Steve will teach the intermediate class - more details in the 'Lesson Structure' session opposite.

Steve and Jason would like to thank all our regulars for bearing with us while we make these changes to our classes and let the new levels settle - the 8.30 to 8.45 coffee break at Gt. Doddington will resume this week!

Info

Q: Do I need to bring a partner?
A: A partner is not necessary... During the partner session we swap partners every few minutes so everyone gets to dance with everyone else! Also, the first half of the beginners class is used to teach the basic steps: this is done solo, so the need for a partner is less in the beginners classes than the more advanced classes.

Q:What should I wear?Wear dance shoes if you have them.
A: Anything in which you are comfortable doing light exercise... beginners classes are not too energetic, so no need for a track-suit! We recommend you wear shoes with soles that are not too soft so you can turn easily. Of course, if you already have a pair or dance shoes you can always wear those! (If you would like to try some dance shoes take a look at Chameleon on our links page).

Q: Do I need to book?
A: There is no need to book in advance - all our classes are designed to be 'drop in', which means that as long as you are at the appropriate level you can follow each class without attending in previous weeks. So if you have other commitments you can attend weekly, fortnightly or whenever it suits you.

Q: How much does it cost?
The cost varies between venues -

Gt. Doddington:£5.00 per lesson
Northampton:£6.00 per lesson

All venues:
Students (NUS): £4.50
Children under 16: £3.00
We don't charge more if you decide to take both the beginners and improvers classes.

Q: Is there an age limit?
Salsa is for all ages, and people of all ages attend our classes - as long as you have no medical condition which prevents you from dancing you are welcome to attend. We do ask that anyone 16 and under is accompanied by an adult over 18 - the adult does not have to take part and we have seating and free refreshments if they would like to watch.

Our youngest dancer is 10 years old and our oldest is over 60 (haven't been able to get the actual age out of them yet!).

Lesson Structure

Which class is for me?
Beginners This is for people who have not danced before. Students usually attend this class for about 3 to 6  weeks before trying the improvers class.
Improvers Once you feel comfortable with the beginner moves (basic, side, and back step, plus right turn and crossbody) you can try the improvers class
Intermediate You will probably need to have attended the improvers class for at least 12 weeks to start the intermediate class. You will need to know moves like the cuddle, crossbody with turns, and hammerlocks, in addition to a double right turn (ladies) and double left turn(guys). The guys need to be able to lead theses moves.
Styling
isolation
turns
This usually runs alongside the beginners class and is for anyone at improver level and above.

Beginners Lessons (level 1)Couple dancing salsa at Great Doddington
The beginners classes are structured so that you can drop in any week even if you've not danced before - we teach each of the steps from scratch every week. The class at beginners level is structured as follows:

If it's your very first lesson:

In the first part we teach you the basic salsa steps, breaking each step down so you undertstand how to dance them. This is done solo, i.e. we do not use partners for this part of the class. In the second part of the lesson we teach you to dance those steps with a partner.

If you've already had a lesson with us:

We revise the first week's steps and then, with partners, we teach one of the two main salsa moves: Cross body and right turn. If you feel you need longer to practise the basic steps before doing turns etc. you can stay in the first week's class as long as you like.

After a few beginners lessons you should begin to feel comfortable with these salsa moves and their variations. Once you can dance the salsa moves in beginners lessons at the speed of salsa music you can consider moving to the improvers class.

Improvers (Level 2)
Those of you who are comfortable with the beginners moves can join the Level 2 class. In this session we do not teach the basic footwork (you will already know it!) , but spend the time learning a routine, with partners, based on the moves you learnt in the beginners class. As the Level 2 class follows the beginners class you are welcome to try the Level 2 class once you have attended around 4 to 6 beginner lessons - also if you have have had a few lessons in other styles of salsa (e.g. cuban) you can come up to speed in the beginners class and then try the next level - there is no extra charge for doing both the beginners and the improvers class on the same evening.

Intermediate (Level 3)
Once you feel comfortable with the steps we do in the improvers class you can move on to the Intermediate class. To enter this class you need to know all the moves in the improvers class AND:

Ladies: Need to be able to do a double right turn.

Men: Need to be able to lead the ladies turns AND be able to do a double left turn, and be comfortable with a hook turn.

The requirements for the intermediate class is to make sure the class is safe for both leaders and followers. This class is much more demanding than the improvers class: We perform more complex moves, with fewer basic steps between them, which gives the routines a more flowing look and feel.

Common to all lessons
We start each class with a warm up (doing solo steps/shines) and end each class with a warm down - we teach at least one of the solo steps each week.

Contact us if you require more details.
